Homeowners who have purchased policies through the National Flood Insurance Program may be covered in certain disaster events.

Flood insurance is available to homeowners and renters homeowners. Costs vary depending on how much insurance is purchased, what it covers, and the property’s flood risk. Policies provide coverage for building, with optional coverage available for contents. Typically, there’s a 30-day waiting period from date of purchase before your policy goes into effect. The agent who writes your homeowners or property insurance should be able to assist you in determining your eligibility and coverage options.

What happens after I file a claim?

An adjuster should contact you within a few days of filing your claim. Make sure you have the following information handy:

  • The name of your insurance company.
  • Your policy number.
  • A telephone and/or email address where you can be reached at all times.

Separate damaged from undamaged property. Your adjuster will need evidence of the damage to your home and possessions to prepare and estimate.

  • Take photos of all damaged property.
  • Make a list of damaged or lost items – include date of purchase, value and receipts, if possible.
  • Do not dispose of damaged property until the adjuster has had an opportunity to view it.
